Episode 1 - Creativity as a Path to Wellness with Johnny Lemoine

By Jessica Garrison

Welcome back to the 7th season of the F.E.E.L Podcast! We are delighted to have our first guest of the season, Johnny Lemoine, who was also the designer for our book Embracing Layers Unapologetically. In this episode, Johnny takes us through the talking points with a new lens and shares how his journey to embracing his layers has affected his creative process.

Whatever project Johnny decides to take on, whether it be designing a website or illustrating for a brand, he has to feel connected to the work. I can understand from a creative perspective if you’re not connected to what you’re working on, it will either take forever to complete or not be the highest quality you’re capable of (or even both). That’s why Melissa, Johnny, and I decided he was the perfect fit for designing our book; he had a deep connection with it from the start, and we knew he understood the message we wanted to share with the world.

Prioritizing self-care is one of the ways Johnny is able to kickstart his creative process in the morning by swimming in the ocean (I wish I could do this every day, too!), meditating, showing gratitude, practicing yoga, and spending time in his garden. After he’s taken the time for himself in the morning, he’s ready to dedicate the day to whatever project he may be working on. These activities help to open him up creatively while creating a sense of peace within him, and he’s able to give his all to his work.

It’s so inspiring to hear Johnny talk about his embracing layers journey, especially after all of the incredible work we’ve done with him. He shows such strength and vulnerability when talking about his relationship with his father, his struggles with drinking, and the compassion he has through all his work in the community. There’s no better episode to kick off the newest season than this one, filled with special gems and the encouraging voice of Johnny to remind us why we keep going.

Johnny’s resources will be listed on the Embracing Layers website, and you can also visit his website to view his art or if you’re interested in working with him. We look forward to sharing Johnny’s talent with the release of our book on September 4th! There’s enough room for everyone to join us on this incredible journey of finding empowerment and embracing layers.

Ways to Engage: What are some self-care practices that recharge you or help you get ready for the day? What are some self-care practices you wish you made more time for? Experiment with a few practices or even some new ones Johnny described and take notes on how they affect your body and mind. There isn’t a universal answer to self-care practices so trying out new things can help prepare you for days when you need to try something different.
